Ranatunga tells Lankan players to skip IPL for England tour

Colombo: Next edition of the Indian Premier League might not feature any Sri Lankan with cricket board chief Arjuna Ranatunga writing to the players, asking them to skip IPL 2009 which coincides with their tour of England.

In a complete volte face to his earlier stance on IPL, Ranatunga made it clear that the board released the players for only the inaugural edition which concluded last month.

“I take it that the (Sri Lankan) players would be prepared to heed the call to perform for their country in preference to the IPL. At the most, the players concerned would miss a part of the IPL series on account of the tour of England,” Ranatunga said in his letter to the top players.

Incidentally, the former captain had earlier remarked that the players could not be forced to tour England at the expense of IPL.

Singing a different tune, Ranatunga wrote “by permitting our national players to participate in the IPL, it is private individuals who earn a percentage of the players’ earning while Sri Lanka cricket gets no financial benefits whatsoever.”

On the players’ unfavourable response to a letter by SLC Chief Executive Duleep Mendis late last year regarding the commitments of the national players, Ranatunga said they should agree to tour England for the two Tests and 3 ODI series in April/May 2009.

‘Kandhasamy’ in crisis

The crew of the unit of ‘Kandhasamy’, who returned from Mexico recently, was in for a rude shock.  Nearly 30 out of the 120 film rolls that were used for the shoot in the South American country have been found damaged.  The blame game has begun with some accusing  the airport staff of ‘mishandling’ the film rolls.  An inside source says that it could be the fault of the unit itself as they were extremely casual in attitude.

Normally for films that are shot abroad, the film rolls are prevented from getting ‘scanned’ at the airport by the security staff, if the crew provides ample proof to the airport authorities that those film rolls are used ones.  This particular formality must have been followed in this instance too.

‘Kalaipuli’ Thanu is very upset as all the efforts and money spent in Mexico have been wasted.  The veteran producer toyed briefly with the idea of flying to Mexico again, but later has ordered these scenes to be re-shot at perfect ‘settings’ in Binny Mills, where the climax of the Rajni-starrer ‘Sivaji: The Boss’ was shot.
