To prevent Email worms

There are four easy steps you can take to help close that window of vulnerability and help keep email worms off your system.

Rule 1: Identification - Understanding the nature of the attachment is the first step towards email safety. Any executable type attachment has the potential to be infected. This covers a wide range of extensions. Complicating matters is that, by default, Windows suppresses file extensions. Make sure you have file extension viewing enabled. {i]Hint: If you aren’t sure what file extensions are, sign up for the free Windows Basics online course.

Rule 2: Intent - An executable type attachment should not be opened unless it was specifically requested or expected. Since email worms are sent to addresses found on infected users’ machines, just knowing the sender is no proof of intent - they may well be infected. In fact, odds are an email worm will arrive from someone you know and the sender is oblivious to the viral email being sent from their machine. Worse, today’s worms spoof the From address, so it may well be that it’s not even from the person you think it is. If there’s any question as to the intent, see Rule 3 below.

Rule 3: Necessity - This is the simplest rule to follow, but one that many people ignore. If you do not need the attachment, don’t open it. Delete the email instead.

Rule 4: Secure your client - To date, many email worms and viruses have taken advantage of security vulnerabilities found in Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express. However, any mail client that supports HTML and scripting should be considered at risk.

About Email worms

Worms are malicious programs that make copies of themselves over and over, on the local drive, network, email, or Internet. In other words, the sole purpose of a worm is to reproduce, unlike a virus which attempts to infect, i.e. embed its code into, other files.

The most common type of worm is the email worm. True to its type, worm, email worms do not infect other files as do viruses but rather they simply make copies of themselves over and over again. Again true to its type, email worms do this via email, by sending themselves to email addresses found on the infected user’s system.

Email worms can spread globally within moments by using this simple tactic. Consider one person who becomes infected but happens to have twenty email addresses found on his system. All twenty of those addresses will be sent a copy of the worm. If any of the recipients become infected, they will also unwittingly spread copies of the worm to all their friends, colleagues, and business associates whose email addresses happen to be on their system.

ICC may take away CT from Pak, states Imran Khan

The ICC has retained Pakistan as the host of next month’s Champions Trophy for now but former captains like Imran Khan fear that the event would be taken away from the troubled country at the 11th hour due to mounting security worries.

Imran said he remained pessimistic about the eight-nation tournament being held in Pakistan. The former all-rounder felt there was every possibility of ICC taking it away as it would be difficult to convince countries like Australia and England about the security situation here.

“The security concerns are many and when we have 65 suicide attacks last year so the foreign players are obviously scared of coming to Pakistan,” Imran said.

WindowsXP tweak to Add and Remove Destinations for the “Send To” Option

The right-click context menu does have one useful option, Send To, which allows you to send the file to any one of a list of programs or locations-for example, to a drive, program, or folder.

It would be nice to edit that list, adding new locations and programs and taking away existing ones that you never use. How locations and programs show up on the menu appears to be somewhat of a mystery, but, in fact, it’s easy to hack. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\<User Name>\SendTo, where <User Name> is your user name. The folder will be filled with shortcuts to all the locations you find on your Send To context menu. To remove an item from the Send To menu, delete the shortcut from the folder. To add an item to the menu, add a shortcut to the folder by highlighting the folder, choosing File ? New ? Shortcut, and following the instructions for creating a shortcut. The new setting will take effect immediately; you don’t have to exit Windows Explorer for it to go into effect.

Sri Lanka finished day two of their second cricket Test against India at 215 for five wickets, still trailing the visitors by 114 runs in their first innings here today.

At stumps, Mahela Jayawardene was batting on 46, while Prasanna Jayawardene was on 5.

Mendis, whose mesmerising variations and guiles have troubled the Indians, was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers as he recorded his maiden five-wicket haul, finishing with impressive figures of 28-1-117-6. The Indians, who desperately needed to win the match to keep themselves afloat in the three-match series, will now have to stop the islanders from piling up a mammoth first innings total to remain in the game.

With three full days remaining in the crucial Test, the home team has a slight advantage at this stage.
